Copy Editing

Copy Editing focuses on sentence mechanics and improves the readability and effectiveness of your writing.

Here are the types of Copy Editing we offer:

Line Editing

This type of intensive edit combines the higher-level analysis of content editing (such as plot and characters or subject and organization) with copy editing (think grammar, spelling, and punctuation corrections and rewriting for readability) to make an edit that is the best of both worlds. With a line edit, you will receive hundreds of comments within your manuscript, providing feedback and advice about specific lines and details, and a thorough report that is typically more than 30 pages. This report will also come with a style sheet that includes the spellings of names, proper nouns, and other relevant words (so you don’t have Emilie on one page and Emily on another) and a character list that includes the character name, role, appearance, and chapter entered, for fiction.

For both fiction and nonfiction, line editing includes fact-checking and continuity checking (so someone doesn’t have brown hair on one page and blond hair on another).

Your editorial report will include sections about:

Fiction

  • reader experience

  • plot

  • character development

  • dialogue

  • setting & worldbuilding

  • point of view

  • structure

  • pace

  • opening

  • ending

After your edit, we will have a 1-hour video consultation. You have access to email consultation, at your request, during your entire rewrite.

This type of edit is right for you have already had a developmental edit or manuscript evaluation or if you are beginning the editing process and if you are looking both for feedback about your content and corrections in individual sentences.

Comprehensive Copy Edit

This is a detailed edit that combines the basic copy-editing elements (such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style corrections, along with fact-checking) with more in-depth tactics (such as rewriting sentences and restructuring paragraphs). The Comprehensive Copy Edit includes targeted feedback and advice through comments within your manuscript and a personalized editorial report that is typically more than 8 pages, depending on your book’s length.

Your editorial report will include sections about:

Fiction

Basic Copy Edit

This light copy edit includes a cleanup to fix spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors and a style check to ensure your manuscript conforms to guidelines in the Chicago Manual of Style. Your edit will include targeted feedback and advice through comments within your manuscript and a personalized editorial report that is typically more than 6 pages, depending on your book’s length, that explains the changes we made and gives tips about how to avoid these mistakes next time.

Your editorial report will include sections about:

  • resources

  • style sheet

  • character list

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step in the editing process. It is done off of a typeset PDF from your formatter and consists of a list of standard corrections, rather than changes made directly in the document. This final check looks for remaining grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style errors and inspects formatting, such as headers, footers, and line breaks.

Your proofread will come with a brief editorial report explaining recommended changes.

Your editorial report will include sections about:

Fiction

  • copy editing

  • style guidelines

  • formatting

  • resources

  • style sheet

Nonfiction

  • copy editing

  • style guidelines

  • formatting

  • resources

  • style sheet

This type of edit is right for you if your manuscript has been copy edited and completely typeset, including covers. This is the final step in the editing process.

It was very easy working with Erin, and she provided tremendous suggestions that made my novel even stronger. Her editing style was exactly what I needed for my first book. Also, because of her helping me with my first fifty pages, I believe that made my opening pages stand out and was why I was able to find a publisher!

Erin did an edit of my YA novel and provided excellent feedback. Her explanations were clear about both the things that were working and the things that were not, and she gave constructive comments about how passages could be better. On top of all that, she is a consummate professional with regard to deadlines and communication. I will definitely use her again.
